Navagio - Shipwreck
“The Shipwreck”, as it is called, is found on a secluded beach on the north western coast of Zakynthos. Today it is one of the most interesting sights on the island.
The shipwreck occurred in 1981 when the ship Panagiotis, belonging to a Kefalonitic, foundered in a heavy storm. The story is that for many years that it had illegally transported cigarettes from Turkey into international waters where it would sell them at a pre-designated. Until then, the beach was called Agios Georgios
At first, the inhabitants were alarmed by the environmental disaster that they believed would be created by ship with its cargo, and hence the island’s tourism.
But shortly after, it was a source of attraction for both domestic and non-domestic tourists. It is no coincidence that international newspapers agree it is among the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world.
Today, the wreck is found in the center of an inaccessible beach, with gravel that can only be visited by sea and is one of the most famous sights on the island. Thanks to the inaccessibility of the area, its waters remain crystal clear and transparent.
